I’m demonstrating how to make a card for a boy or girl or any playful adult using bright colors with high contrast. I purchased letter stickers and cactus rub-ons from the Dollar Tree store to use on my cards. Anyone can make these two cards!
For the girl’s card, I chose to use bright pink cardstock and matted it with black cardstock. I also dry embossed the pink with an embossing folder and die cut machine to give it some texture. If you don’t have one of those, you can use some pink ink that is a shade darker than the cardstock and a background stamp or even something from your kitchen or garage that has a flat surface and some kind of texture. I did this on another card, which you can see here. I used a circle die to cut out a circle from a piece of copy paper to use as a guide to place my letter stickers. To create a mat for my cactus rub-on, I cut a circle from a piece of yellow cardstock and a flower from a piece of green cardstock using a die set from Spellbinders called Lacework Button Flowers S4-607. The green color is a nice contrast to the pink.
- Tip: colors that have high contrast with each other are colors that are farther away from each other on the color wheel. Complementary colors are usually directly across from each other like red and green or purple and yellow or blue and orange. Be careful if you are using any wet medium like paint because complementary colors will turn brown if they are mixed together or come into contact with each other.
For the inside of the card, I cut out two more flowers and yellow circles for the centers of the flowers. I used the yellow circles to rub-on some more images (cute flowers in vases). Finally, I wrote the word, “sweetie” on the inside of the card.
The boys card was easier. I used green cardstock for the mat and tan for the front panel. I used a T-ruler to find the center of the page and drew a two guidelines, one vertical and one horizontal, to help me place my letter stickers. This time I used the cactus rub-on to take the place of the letter “u” in the word “stuck”. For the inside, I simply used two more cactus rub-ons and wrote the word, “cutie” on the inside.
